Learn About Learning
Compound Learning Effect
Did you know that just 5m or learning everyday is equivalent to 3days training per working year! Can you believe that!
Most people repeat what they do day-in and day-out. Over 20 years they will have not grown their value, but instead have repeated the same job and the same year 20 times.
This means, the value they bring to the business at the end of the 20years is the same, as the start. In fact, if you take learning inflation into account it will actually be less!
Don't Miss Out
However, someone that even only learns something new everyday for 5minutes (or 3days training per year) to do 3 new things, or make 3 changes or improvements to what they do each year will have added 7 years more than the person who stays the same! This growth is attributed to the fact that on each new learning there is a compound effect on the next (3^3>20^1).
Learning requires a little effort to achieve a change of thinking or approach, whether that is to go on a training course, read a book, take an e-learning, watch a video, discuss your thoughts or even learn by doing something different. This change requires investment and an element of risk. In just 5m you can learn something new everyday conditioning your brain to regularly create new pathways and new thinking that future learning can build upon at a staggering rate.

Rulekits™ and The Rule of 3
So, I am in my mid 20s...
I am the youngest graded manager in the company of 35,000 employees. That basically means every other manager hates me!
People that have worked for 20 years in the same job doing the same thing, managing the same teams are now technically more junior than me. I have a graded bonus and pension. They have worked for years for it.
Now, imagine a situation where you have a room of these people, all staring at you as you pitch your new way of doing what they do.
I was training them how to be better managers, when I had less experience, and less service in the company as well as being half or a third their age.
In that moment, in those first few minutes there was a chance they would walk out. The last thing I needed was one of them to question my credibility.
So, just then, one of them questioned my credibility;
“Hey, Martin, just answer me this. How come I’ve been here 20 years and I know the job backwards, and you’ve been a manager for 3 years and you’re standing at the front telling me what to do?”
Ouch!
In the next few seconds I can’t tell you what was happening on the outside, but on the inside my brain was on overdrive. My neurons were firing and if you asked me now I would say time slowed down, and I spent what felt like several hours calculating and crafting my answer.
In those seconds, my brain had formulated the Rule of 3^3. I realised that the difference between me and them (at the time) was that they had repeated the same year 20 times and that I had 3 years experience of at least 3 new learnings per year (3^3=27)

So, with a deep breath, and with all the courage I could muster I said:
“Tell me, have you done the same job for 20 years?”
“Yes I have” he said proudly.
“Well, that’s interesting, because I would say I have been doing a different job every year. In fact, I would say I grow my role every year by changing and applying new learning. And, what is more, if I draw this on the flipchart for you, you can see that whilst you have 20 years experience of your job, I have 27 years of learning in mine, even though I have only been here for 3.”
I then drew:
3 ^ 3 > 20 ^ 1
(For those of you who didn’t like maths at school this equates to (3 to the power 3) 27 being greater than 20 (20 to the power 1).
It was high risk, and he could have got up and left. He could have punched me in the face. For some reason, in the moment he didn’t. He looked at me, looked at the board, looked at the maths, and then relaxed in his chair, nodded slightly, then said.
“Carry on.”
I didn’t hear a peep out of him for 2 days, and yes, he did thank me for the course at the end. I’m not sure if he changed, but I do know that he told his mates that it was worth going on the course, and from someone like him that was enough to fill my courses for the next few years. Everyone knew if I could convince him, then it must be good!
